Unofficial summer is here and with that comes the summer rentals. There are many online vacation rental sites such as HomeAway, AirBnB, HomeToGo and VRBO. While many who have used these companies to rent their summer dream home have gotten what they were looking for, there are many that complain that it wasn't what they expected.
Don't let your summer dreams become a disappointment!
1. Always look at the reviews and the comments when looking to rent your summer home online. Typically, when someone is really happy about their online experience they will write a review, this also happens on the flip side of the coin, when someone is really unhappy about their experience, they'll write a review. This will give you an opportunity to see what made people happy about this rental and what was disappointing.
2. Make sure that you read the policies regarding cancellations, terminations and insurance. If you do not like the insurance policy that is provided with the home, consider getting your own rental insurance. Life happens, so make sure that you are covered in all these areas beforehand.
3. Always use a credit card. There are many credit card protections that can help you some instances. In addition, this provides some sort of paper trail, where as using cash, offers no protection at all.
4. If there are any issues when you arrive at your rental, immediately contact the landlord or realtor that you are working with. According to real estate attorney Scott Reidenbach, "Take photographs and take videos because the last thing you want to have happen is for the landlord to hold you accountable and have you pay for the damage of a prior occupant."
Read the fine print, do your homework and listen to what others have to say. These three things can help ensure that your summer dream vacation doesn't turn into a summer nightmare.
